Zimbabwe Government commends LIPS-Zim project’s research activities

Permanent Secretary in Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement, Dr. John Basera, visited the European Union-funded - Livestock Production Systems in Zimbabwe (LIPS –Zim) exhibition at Matopos Research Institute, outside the country’s second-largest city, Bulawayo on 28 April 2022. He was accompanied by a high-level delegation from the ministry and other dignitaries. The purpose of the visit was to showcase the project activities and discuss and strengthen partnerships with government departments and meet with researchers, scientists, and farmers involved in the project.

A recent hybrid meeting (virtual and in-person) of more than 50 researchers and representatives of the European Union (EU), national agricultural research system, and non-governmental organizations operating in Zimbabwe, led to strategic discussions on the Improved Livestock Production Systems-Zimbabwe (LIPS – Zim) project. The annual review and planning meeting served up serious dialogue among partners on which improved livestock production technologies can be scaled to benefit more farmers during the remaining life of the project (up to December 2023).

PCP strengthening students’’ agricultural research capacities

The Research Platform Production and Conservation in Partnership (RP-PCP) have since its establishment in 2007 contributed to scientific training and up-skilling of young African scientists in the platform as graduate fellows and encouraging co-research between African, French and other universities.

The Sengwe community in Chiredzi district in Masvingo Province of Zimbabwe faces a number of environmental and development challenges, including erratic rainfall, soil erosion, human–wildlife conflict, low benefit from CAMPFIRE, poaching for bush meat, deforestation, water management, and land use allocation issues.

In preparation for the launch of a new HUMA-NI Project (starting in 2021) and building on the outcomes of the EU-ProSuLi project (ending in 2022), 40 partners and stakeholders representatives held a two-day consultative meeting in Hwange district in Matabeleland North Province of Zimbabwe from September 27- 28.
